Which documents can I use to prove my age?
You’ll need one valid, in-date official ID from the list below. These widely accepted documents help securely confirm your identity and age:
- Passport (from over 200 countries)
- National ID card (where available)
- Driving licence (full or provisional)
- Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)
- UK-specific cards: CitizenCard, Post Office PASS card, or Young Scot card
Can I use an expired document?
No, your document must be valid and in date. Expired documents can’t be accepted for age or identity checks.
Why do I need to take a photo of my ID?
We need a clear photo of your ID so we can check that it’s real, valid, and hasn’t been tampered with. This helps keep the verification process secure and trustworthy.
Do I need to scan both sides of my ID?
Not always – it depends on the type of ID. Some documents only need the front, while others (like driving licences or ID cards) may require both sides. We’ll guide you through what’s needed as you go.
Do I need to take a selfie too?
Yes, we ask for a selfie to make sure it’s really you and to match your face to the photo on your ID. This helps prevent fraud and keeps the process secure.
Is my ID shared with the website?
No, we never share your ID, name, photo, or any personal details. The website only sees the result of the age check (e.g. that you’re over 18), nothing more.
What if I don’t have an ID?
If you look over 21, you can use facial age estimation – either directly on the website or in the free Yoti app – no ID needed.
If you’re under 21 or need a recognised form of ID, you can apply for a Yoti CitizenCard, a trusted, low-cost photo ID. It’s available in age bands like 13–15 and 16–17, making it ideal for teens without a passport or driving licence.
Once you have your CitizenCard, you can use it for ID-based age checks or to create a reusable digital ID in the Yoti app.
